Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.Ronald E. Osborn
Once upon a time a group of writers decided that they wanted to be more than writers. They wanted to come together as a group to give back to the community in which they lived, to offer guidance to other writers in the area so that everyone who found joy in writing could do just that. Write.
Fast forward to 2019. The group has grown. What was once 5 has become 7. They have become a tight-knit group of critique partners, and they have found fast friends in their “Chicken Scratch”. They meet every second and fourth Tuesday at a greasy spoon to talk books, writing, and friendship.
Chicken Scratch was a critique group born from the mind of a fearless leader who saw that a dedicated group of writers needs a solid foundation of readers who can dig deep, cut swiftly, and bring out the best in their fellow authors. The seven members today are all in various stages of their work, but they also knew they wanted to do more than just critique each others’ work. They wanted to help other writers find the same kind of support they had. Thus was born 5th Tuesdays. Every 5th Tuesday, Chicken Scratch hosts a writers’ networking event, inviting writers from all over the Quad Cities to join them. They workshop, discuss how to create and find great writing groups, and all the ABCs of writing craft and publishing.
Late in 2019 the group decided to host a local authors’ anthology with the theme of Last Days. Local writers were challenged to submit short stories featuring the Quad Cities in the “end times” before, during or after an apocalypse event in the hopes that they would be chosen to be included in the anthology. The group is diligently reviewing the submissions and hopes to publish the anthology in 2020.
That was 2019. Let’s look ahead to 2020. What does Chicken Scratch have on its plate for the new year? The group decided that they have two main goals for the year:
- Gather and review the submissions for the Last Days anthology with an expected publication date in 2020. All proceeds will go to a local literacy program in the Quad Cities.
- Continue to grow the 5th Tuesday program and get the word out to local Quad Cities writers that there is a networking event in their area. Anyone who writes, or who is interested in writing, is invited to join the next 5th Tuesday event on December 31, 2019 (location TBD). The group hopes to promote the arts, and especially creative writing and publishing endeavors in the Quad Cities.
This is a call for the writers of the Quad Cities. This is your “bat signal”. There is a place where you can come for information and guidance, where you can find help to create or join a writing group that suits your needs. Chicken Scratch welcomes you, and hopes to see you at 5th Tuesday!
